Playboy Pulls Plug on Portugal Edition Over Nudes, Jesus (photos)

Portugal Edition of PlayboyPlayboy magazine in deeply Catholic Portugal has caused an uproar by publishing photos of Jesus with nude models, prompting the home office in Chicago to  effectively kill the book. So much for Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s progressive attitude.

Catholic Latin countries with Playboy editions seem to have an obsession with religion and Playboy’s hedonism. The Mexican edition cause a similar uproar with it published a religious themed issue.

But this time Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Enterprises has decided to take a stand on its wallet. “It is a shocking breach of our standards and we would have not allowed it to be published if we had seen it in advance,” Playboy spokeswoman Theresa Hennessy told London’s Daily Mail.

The issue, however, is designed to do more than provoke outrage. It was a tribute to the late Nobel laureate José Saramago who authored “The Gospel According to Jesus Christ.” Saramago, who died last month, portrays Jesus as a flawed, human character in his book, much as Dan Brown did in his controversal book “The Da Vinci Code.”
